Famous Fictional Markets

Markets are the backbone of the United Kingdom. They spring up all across the week, selling a range of goods; from the fresh and tasty produce that can be reaped from farmers market; to the ‘one man’s junk is another man’s treasure’ of the weekend clothes market; wholesale and bulk markets for retailers outsize quaint little village markets catered to locals. Britain loves a good market – so much so that we have even invented fictional ones.

Below are listed some of our most famous:

Walford Market – Based in fictional Walford, where our favourite Eastenders reside, Walford market is the central part to the daily goings on in Albert Square. Mainly selling tat and clothes, the market has been in existence since the first 1985 episode; with some of its most well-liked characters running stalls there. From Pete Beale’s fruit and veg operation to Mo’s junky clothes stand.

Goblin Market – As depicted by Christina Rossetti in her 19th century poem of the same name. Goblin Market is the place of sprites and fairies. Selling delicious fruits in abundance, forbidden to humans, cries of traders from the market attracts two sisters who find themselves in terrible trouble after sampling the delicious forbidden fruits. Rossetti really conjures the look and smell of this nocturnal market in her wonderful poem.

Albion Market- Albion market was the name and location of a short-lived soap in the 1980’s. It centred on a market in Salford, Greater Manchester and was intended as an add-on to the ever popular Coronation Street. Launched in the same year as Eastenders, TV producers were confident that its link to Coronation Street would ensure that it did well; unfortunately they were wrong, after just 100 episodes Albion Market closed forever.

Del Boy – Despite the fact that Del Boy is not a market and Sheppard’s Bush market where he allegedly illegally trades is certainly a living breathing market, Del Boy deserves a mention. The stereotype of a cockney market trader, he can wheel and deal anything, and his inclusion in the legendary British comedy ‘Only Fools and Horses’ is said to have made the show, and British comedy. Played by David Jason to comic precision, writer John Sullivan based the character on the unlicensed traders who sold goods from suitcases, and had always fascinated him at the local market.

Diagon Alley, Harry Potter – Leadenhall Market in London is the real life location of the alleyways of magic shops and hostelries made famous in Harry Potter. Although it is a series of shops in jumbled buildings, the customers, layout and bartering of Diagon Alley give it more of a market feel. Famous magic stores and businesses in the alley include: Eeylops Owl Emporium, Flourish and Bolts Magic book Shop, Gringotts Wizarding Bank, Madam Malkin’s Robes, Potage’s Cauldron Supplies and a number of small stall selling everything from magic sweets, to spell inclusions. Diagon Alley is invisible to Muggles, and can be reached through the Leaky Cauldron, an alehouse somewhere along Charing Cross Road between a bookshop and a record store – I’m still looking!

Tips On Online Wig Shopping

Online shopping is one of the most trending activities these days with almost everything available in many online stores. This has simplified shopping with all that you need is to connect with the seller and place your order. Wigs are among the most bought items by women online these days and we need to learn some tips on how well to online shop for these wigs to avoid being shortchanged on things like quality and preference.

Much like any other body item that is personal, selection of a wig is more of a personal matter. You need a wig that will make you look perfect and one that would never embarrass you in public. A wig should be at best be like your natural hair only with some slight improvements. With online shopping, few are the times you will get a sample sent first for you to try out before the actual item is sent. This, therefore, mean that you must be accurate in your order and be as thorough as possible to avoid getting something that you would only wear rarely because it doesn’t make you feel good.

Tips on online wig shopping

Learn about the available types of wigs like sizes, there are three common types, the petite, the average and the large type. This applies to both human hair and synthetic wigs.

Know which one fits you best and the one that will bring the best outlook for you. This you can experiment with your own hair or locally available wigs from your hairdresser to be sure. There are different types like the front lace wigs, full lace wigs, and many others, they all fit in differently with some giving an allowance of blending with your own hair. To be right the wig must completely fit you well.

Also, wigs come in different color shades, like shiny blond, kinky, ebony and others, only the color that complements your skin tone will give you that perfect look. This can be done by trying out the different colors available around and getting to see how they make you feel and appear. Go for what gives you a hundred percent dazzling looks.

As discussed above wigs can be made of real human or synthetic hair, they both differ in prices with human hair being the best but a bit pricier as compared to others. Make your selection with your budget in mind to avoid spending a lot of money on a wig that you do not need that much.

Research on the available means by which the wigs are fixed on the head, there are those that use hair adhesive while other come attached to a cap that is knitted on your scalp. This choice can be dictated by factors like whether one is allergic to the adhesive or how firmly they want the wig to fit.

You also need to know about your head size and the right about of hair that your hair needs. This brings about the different hair wig densities available in the market and only your hairdresser can advise you accordingly.

Lastly research on the available genuine online boutiques, this will ensure that you get everything delivered at the right time and just as you ordered it. Fraudsters are there and they will lure you in with insanely cheap prices but on delivery, you will find that they scammed you. Be cautious and only shop from trusted stores that have a history of genuine dealings.

Conclusion

Online shopping for wigs can be a fun thing, consult your hairdresser to get all the right details regarding the hair types and which wig will look great on you.

Affiliate Marketing – Don’t Be Mislead by Clickbank Gravity

If you are an affiliate marketer, you are probably familiar with Clickbank. Clickbank is a large online marketplace and publisher of downloadable information products. You can buy ebooks and software at the site, but most people use the site to either publish information products or to find products to promote as an affiliate. Clickbank offers tools that make it easy for both publishers and affiliates to easily make sales of the products offered there.

Affiliates often search through the Clickbank Marketplace to find suitable products to promote and Clickbank provides a number of statistical measures that show how successful a product may be in the marketplace. Many affiliates, especially those who are new to online marketing, automatically choose the products that have the highest popularity or “gravity” without realizing that doing so may actually make it more difficult to make sales.

Gravity is a score that shows how popular a particular product is among other marketers and how well the product is selling. The formula for determining gravity is proprietary, but the higher the number, the more popular the product. Many new marketers make the mistake of choosing high gravity products when they would be better off choosing a product with a more modest score.

Although there is nothing inherently wrong with choosing a popular product to promote, there are a couple of potential pitfalls of using high gravity as your selection criterion:

Products with high gravity tend to be new and have typically been on the market only for a few weeks. Because of that, it can be hard to determine if the product is actually of high quality. Often it takes a few weeks for customers who are dissatisfied with a product to return it for a refund. Everyone may be buying a product this week, but the same buyers may be returning the product for a refund next week.

You will face a lot of competition if you elect to promote a popular product. The score itself indicates that the product is being heavily promoted, so that means you will find yourself competing with a lot of marketers, both established and new, in trying to earn your commissions.

Today’s hot product is tomorrow’s forgotten product. A lot of “hot” Clickbank products have sharp sales spikes when they are new, only to see sales drop to nothing in a few weeks’ time when something better comes along.

The Clickbank marketplace has tens of thousands of products for sale. Some of them are new, but a lot of them have been around for a long time and have an established track record of good sales over a prolonged period of time. If you are new to marketing, you might be best served by taking some time to find high-quality quality products that have been around for a while. You likely won’t face the stiff competition that you would encounter with more popular products and you will also be promoting a product that you know will be a steady seller for you over time.

While there are many useful and potentially profitable products for sale at Clickbank, it sometimes pays to promote a product that is not among the most popular, as less competition means greater profit. Sometimes less is more.

Best Money Market Returns: Understanding Money Market Accounts and Which Bank You Should Choose

For the longest time, banks only offered two types of accounts: checking and savings. If you wanted to earn interest, you’d have to rely on long-term savings accounts. Today, there are numerous options, including CDs and money market accounts. The latter is a hybrid between a savings and a checking account: it allows you to write only a limited number of checks each month or make limited debit purchases, yet your money will earn higher interest than with a savings account. You should first search for the best money market returns before starting an account.

And you’ll find the best returns if you put your money in an online bank. If you stick to a traditional bank, you’ll get FAR LESS than a 1% rate on deposits less than $100,000. With an online bank, you could get at least 1%.

Note: Whatever you do, don’t mistake money market accounts with money market funds. The latter is a type of investment fund that isn’t backed by the FDIC. It might be something you are interested in at some point, but for the lowest amount of risk possible, it’s best to stick with an online bank that offers the best money market returns.

You’ll likely be required to maintain a minimum balance, which varies from one bank to the next. You will also be expected to keep that certain balance in the account at all times (on the agreed upon duration) in order to avoid fees and continue getting a good return.

Best Money Market Returns Do Not Require Monthly Fees

You should NOT have to pay any monthly maintenance or service fees. Strike out any bank that will try to charge you for those. This is why you should take the time to read the terms and conditions, even though they can be tedious.

There will most likely be a penalty fee if you go below the minimum balance requirement, so only put money in that you will be absolutely sure that you won’t be dipping into for at least a year.

Here are some of the banks that are offering the best money market returns right now (just remember to research each individually and read the terms and conditions):

• TIAA Bank – 1.85% introductory rate

• Investors eAccess – 1.75% APY

• Sallie Mae – 1.75% APY

• CIT Bank – 1.85% APY (only $100 memory required)

Overall, CIT Bank is probably your safest bet for the best money market returns. You’ll get a high APY regardless of the balance. There are no maintenance fees to worry about either, and your money is secured by the FDIC.

Sally Hayson The Successful Business Woman

The late Sayde Hayson personified hard work, a valuable skill she passed on to her entrepreneurial son, John Hayson. To some she was known as ‘Sally’, a competitive entrepreneur who defied the odds doing more than most working mothers. Sally was a well-known Northbridge Plaza owner, a property she purchased and co-owned with her son from 1987 to 2004. The mother and son team turned a underperforming Plaza into a successful shopping centre. Growing up, Sally had a difficult life, hard work was something she learned and mastered at a very young age.

With no formal education, Sally was married at a young age. By the time she reached 27, Sally had 3 children and was running a fruit shop where she worked 18 hour shifts, seven days each week. Sally was determined to succeed in both business and motherhood.

Her day started at 2am, driving to the fruit markets in order to make it back to help her kids get ready for school. Between running the fruit markets and being a mother; Sally was also a busy real estate trader. She sold land and built houses with capital from her business.

In the midst of all of that she was also running a small shopping centre started by her father-in-law. She sold the fruit shop, and added an additional 22 shops and eight offices. Sally sold the shopping centre in 1986, and the following year purchased Northbridge Plaza. When she bought the plaza it wasn’t a thriving business, the first redevelopment was in 1989 with the redesigning of internal mall areas to correct traffic flow, some additional shops and a refurbishment. The last extension took place in 2001, with Sally dedicating more and more time to making the venture a success.

In 52 years Sally went on holiday twice.

In the years that followed, the Plaza became one of the best performing shopping centres in Sydney. Apart from being a successful business woman, Sally was also a humanitarian donating to community groups and local schools. She was a founding sponsor of the Umbilical Cord Blood Bank, and each year she sponsored the Northbridge Rotary fireworks and donated to Royal North Shore Hospital annually. The Rotary Club Northbridge awarded her with its highest honour, the Paul Harris fellowship.

Sally sadly passed away in 2010 on the 16th of August at the age of 69 after a long struggle with cancer, but her legacy lives on.

What Are The Greatest Changes In Shopping In Your Lifetime

What are the greatest changes in shopping in your lifetime? So asked my 9 year old grandson.

As I thought of the question the local Green Grocer came to mind. Because that is what the greatest change in shopping in my lifetime is.

That was the first place to start with the question of what are the greatest changes in shopping in your lifetime.

Our local green grocer was the most important change in shopping in my lifetime. Beside him was our butcher, a hairdresser and a chemist.

Looking back, we were well catered for as we had quite a few in our suburb. And yes, the greatest changes in shopping in my lifetime were with the small family owned businesses.

Entertainment While Shopping Has Changed

Buying butter was an entertainment in itself.

My sister and I often had to go to a favourite family grocer close by. We were always polite as we asked for a pound or two of butter and other small items.

Out came a big block of wet butter wrapped in grease-proof paper. Brought from the back of the shop, placed on a huge counter top and included two grooved pates.

That was a big change in our shopping in my lifetime… you don’t come across butter bashing nowadays.

Our old friendly Mr. Mahon with the moustache, would cut a square of butter. Lift it to another piece of greaseproof paper with his pates. On it went to the weighing scales, a bit sliced off or added here and there.

Our old grocer would then bash it with gusto, turning it over and over. Upside down and sideways it went, so that it had grooves from the pates, splashes going everywhere, including our faces.

My sister and I thought this was great fun and it always cracked us up. We loved it, as we loved Mahon’s, on the corner, our very favourite grocery shop.

Grocery Shopping

Further afield, we often had to go to another of my mother’s favourite, not so local, green grocer’s. Mr. McKessie, ( spelt phonetically) would take our list, gather the groceries and put them all in a big cardboard box.

And because we were good customers he always delivered them to our house free of charge. But he wasn’t nearly as much fun as old Mr. Mahon. Even so, he was a nice man.

All Things Fresh

So there were very many common services such as home deliveries like:

• Farm eggs

• Fresh vegetables

• Cow’s milk

• Freshly baked bread

• Coal for our open fires

Delivery Services

A man used to come to our house a couple of times a week with farm fresh eggs.

Another used to come every day with fresh vegetables, although my father loved growing his own.

Our milk, topped with beautiful cream, was delivered to our doorstep every single morning.

Unbelievably, come think of it now, our bread came to us in a huge van driven by our “bread-man” named Jerry who became a family friend.

My parents always invited Jerry and his wife to their parties, and there were many during the summer months. Kids and adults all thoroughly enjoyed these times. Alcohol was never included, my parents were teetotallers. Lemonade was a treat, with home made sandwiches and cakes.

The coal-man was another who delivered bags of coal for our open fires. I can still see his sooty face under his tweed cap but I can’t remember his name. We knew them all by name but most of them escape me now.

Mr. Higgins, a service man from the Hoover Company always came to our house to replace our old vacuum cleaner with an updated model.

Our insurance company even sent a man to collect the weekly premium.

People then only paid for their shopping with cash. This in itself has been a huge change in shopping in my lifetime.

In some department stores there was a system whereby the money from the cash registers was transported in a small cylinder on a moving wire track to the central office.

Some Of The Bigger Changes

Some of the bigger changes in shopping were the opening of supermarkets.

• Supermarkets replaced many individual smaller grocery shops. Cash and bank cheques have given way to credit and key cards.

• Internet shopping… the latest trend, but in many minds, doing more harm, to book shops.

• Not many written shopping lists, because mobile phones have taken over.

On a more optimistic note, I hear that book shops are popular again after a decline.

Personal Service Has Most Definitely Changed

So, no one really has to leave home, to purchase almost anything, technology makes it so easy to do online.

And we have a much bigger range of products now, to choose from, and credit cards have given us the greatest ease of payment.

We have longer shopping hours, and weekend shopping. But we have lost the personal service that we oldies had taken for granted and also appreciated.

Because of their frenetic lifestyles, I have heard people say they find shopping very stressful, that is grocery shopping. I’m sure it is when you have to dash home and cook dinner after a days work. I often think there has to be a better, less stressful way.

My mother had the best of both worlds, in the services she had at her disposal. With a full time job looking after 9 people, 7 children plus her and my dad, she was very lucky. Lucky too that she did not have 2 jobs.

We were not rich but we were happy kids and so grateful with any little treats that came our way.

And even now, not only do we love each other, we like each other too. Although scattered around the world, we’re always in touch.

The New ABT Volkswagen Tiguan With Concave Truck Wheels and Engine Tuning

One of the most popular segments in the automotive marketplace is the CUV or Compact Utility Vehicle. Just like the SUV, the CUV offers greater amounts of luggage space and capabilities but with better fuel economy and a more car-like ride quality. These characteristics have made them quite popular in the automotive marketplace, leading many companies to invest in CUV models. Volkswagen was one company that has attempted to take advantage of the CUV marketplace with their new Tiguan. Based on the Golf chassis, the Tiguan offers an SUV-like capability with a sportier feel. But there are still those that crave even more sport which is why the team at ABT Sportsline created a new upgrade program for the Volkswagen Tiguan that gives it even better performance and style. The program includes new engine tuning software, chassis modifications, concave truck wheels, and new exterior styling upgrades.

The first aspect of the Volkswagen Tiguan model range that the team at ABT Sportsline focused on was the diesel and gasoline engines. Three 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline four engines are available in the Volkswagen Tiguan with outputs of 110-, 140-, and 170 horsepower in stock form. With the ABT Power package that includes a variety of modifications including a software tune, the engines end up producing a total of 140-, 170,- and 195 horsepower total for better acceleration and top speed performance. Next up was the line of gasoline engines, three of which displace 1.4-liter and the top-of-the-line displacing 2.0 liters and utilizing a turbocharger. The 1.4-liter engines that produce a stock 122-, 150, and 160- horsepower generate a total of 160-, 180-, and 210 horsepower outputs after the ABT Power upgrade package with software tunes. The final 2.0 TFSI turbocharged engine with a 180 horsepower stock output sends a total of 230 horsepower to all four of the concave truck wheels after the ABT Power upgrade.

The next step was to upgrade the exterior design of the Volkswagen Tiguan. Here, ABT Sportsline engineers and designers teamed up to create a stylish and sporty appearance using new body work. The front fascia wears a new grille and a spoiler lip to create downforce while each side of the CUV features new door inserts, vents, and side skirts that sit between the new concave truck wheels. The rear of the Tiguan is finished off with a new bumper insert and roof spoiler.

The final upgrade package was for the Tiguan’s chassis. ABT Sportsline installed a set of new sport lowering springs to reduce the overall center of gravity for better handling dynamics and a new set of wheel spacers at the front and rear axles. They then fitted a set of concave truck wheels that give the Tiguan a more muscular stance and then fitted them with new performance tires for better grip.

Abu Mus’Ab Al-Suri’s Teachings on Fourth-Generation Warfare, Individual Jihad and Future of Al-Qaeda

On July 1, 2010, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) released the first edition of its English-language online magazine Inspire. The magazine, a slickly produced propaganda document, represents an effort to engage the English-language world and to recruit English-speaking Muslims to join the cause of jihad.

Inspire’s primary message to its readers is that they too can be part of Al-Qaeda and its mission, but from the comfort of their own home. Instead of traveling thousands of miles to join the jihad, the reader need only turn on their computer and visit websites to receive training – i.e. viewing videos and listening to sermons of their favorite leaders, and learning to handle weapons, explosives and even planning attacks. For example, a Q&A section in the most recent edition of Inspire includes an unnamed Muslim living in the West asking for guidance regarding the best way to join jihad and reach the jihad fronts. The magazine’s answer to him, and to all readers, is: “[B]ased on your ability, you choose the target [in your home area]. Your pool of targets is large, so make sure to think of all of the available options. An example of something local, easy, and effective is attacking an army recruiting center, nightclub, highway, or busy shopping mall.”

Five issues of Inspire have now been released. They include multiple article series focusing on different aspects of jihad of vital interest to Al-Qaeda recruits and potentials recruits. One series, “The Jihad Experience,” by Abu Mus’ab Al-Suri, has appeared in four of the magazine’s issues, and Inspire No. 5 offers a preview of the next chapter, to be published in the upcoming Inspire No. 6.

Abu Mus’ab Al-Suri – General Background
Abu Mus’ab Al-Suri, 53, is one of Al-Qaeda’s most prominent ideologues and strategists. Born Mustafa bin ‘Abd Al-Qader Setmariam Nassar, he has multiple aliases, among them ‘Umar ‘Abd Al-Hakim. As a member of the Syrian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, he was exiled from Syria in 1982 after the clash between the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood and president Hafez Al-Assad.

His past in the ranks of the jihad includes close ties to Abdullah Azzam, Osama bin Laden, Mullah Omar, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, to name a few. At various times, he has been affiliated with, or officially a member of, the Muslim Brotherhood, the GIA (Armed Islamic Group of Algeria), the Taliban, and Al-Qaeda.

Al-Suri is also known as a trailblazer in jihadist media. In 1997, he was a founder of the media company called the Islamic Conflict Studies Bureau. Al-Suri and the Islamic Conflict Studies Bureau are believed to be responsible for delivering Al-Qaeda videotapes to foreign news media. He is also known for having arranged multiple interviews for Osama bin Laden with the Western media while he resided in Britain. He was an editor of Al-Ansar magazine, which promoted the insurgency in Algeria and was aligned with the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria, and, according to his wife, Helena Moreno, had “worked in the Taliban Ministry of Information as a consultant.”

The U.S. National Counterterrorism Center’s 2011 calendar lists Al-Suri as an “Al-Qaeda propagandist and trainer, indicted in Spain for his role in the Madrid train bombings in 2004, and [who] was arrested in Pakistan.”

Al-Suri – A Model for Followers of Al-Qaeda in the West
For numerous reasons, Al-Suri can be seen as a model for jihadists in the West. First, as a fair-skinned, blue-eyed redhead, it is easy for him to blend in to European or American surroundings (in fact, one of his aliases is El Rubio – “the blond one” in Spanish). He has Spanish citizenship, and his wife, Helena Moreno, is a Spanish convert to Islam. Al-Suri has lived in several Western countries and understands Western culture. He was involved with Da’wa – Islamic outreach to non-Muslims in an attempt to convert them – and his wife has described him as someone “who wanted to build bridges and open dialogue with non-Muslims.”

Al-Suri’s Blueprint for the Next Generation of Al-Qaeda
From 2001, when the U.S. put a bounty on him, until his capture in 2005, Al-Suri wrote prolifically, including thousands of pages detailing his philosophy for a post 9/11 world. In 2004, he published online the 1,600-page “The Global Islamic Resistance Call,” which laid the foundations for the current generation of followers of Al-Qaeda in the West who would be willing to engage in jihadi activities without leaving their home countries, and with little or no contact with the organization. His book provided steps to launch jihad without the need to attend a training camp; indeed, he was one of the first to grasp the Internet’s potential for replacing the training camp. “The Global Islamic Resistance Call” (which was republished in Inspire magazine and can be found later in this report) outlines strategies for future jihadists, with an emphasis on unorganized cells and leaderless Jihad. Portions of his lectures also showed up on the Internet and were circulated by jihadists on DVD for the past few years.

The Impact of Al-Suri’s Strategic Theory on Al-Qaeda’s Future

The assassination of Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011 provided another opportunity for Al-Suri’s philosophy to gain in stature within Al-Qaeda’s ranks. The release of the June 3, 2011 official Al-Qaeda media wing Al-Sahab video titled “Do Not Rely on Others, Take [the Task] Upon Yourself,” provides further evidence that Al-Suri’s doctrine will be a part of Al-Qaeda’s future plans. In the video, Al-Qaeda Central’s leaders all focused on the topic of al-jihad al-fardi (“individual jihad”), namely, jihad operations performed by a single individual or by a small group which was one of Al-Suri’s main principles.
