Listen to the Children While They Play

I was 13 years old in 1968 when Henson Cargill, a relatively unknown name in country music, topped the country charts with the Jack Moran and Glenn Tubb penned classic, “Skip a Rope.”

I was just getting into music in a new way. And music was changing in an important way. Pop music was becoming more politically and socially conscious. In a few short years we had grown from “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to “Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “All Along the Watchtower.”

Country music was changing too. In another year Kenny Rogers would hit it big with the Mel Tillis Vietnam-inspired “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town.” On all popular music fronts, social commentary was on the rise.

“Skip a Rope” was another early country entry in the “all we need is love” musical movement.

Back in those days the teen music magazines printed the lyrics to top songs in the back of the publication. I was becoming fascinated with songwriting: who wrote the song, what do the words “really mean,” etc.

“Skip a Rope” was one of those songs that I found the words to. As a kid experiencing big family problems, the lyrics were particularly meaningful and poignant to me.

“Skip a Rope” dealt with it all: family discord, racial discrimination, greed…and I was not yet far removed from literally skipping rope on the playground and hearing the kind of mean-spirited things kids can say, often just repeating what they had heard at home. The song rang “true” to me, and I guess for countless others as well.

Over the years I’ve often thought about “Skip a Rope” and hummed it to myself. I didn’t recall who wrote or even who recorded the song, until I learned that Henson Cargill passed away at the age of 66 on March 24th, 2007. The news brought back a flood of memories.

Skip A Rope Lyrics

(Words and Music by Jack Moran and Glenn Tubb)

Oh, listen to the children while they play,

Now ain’t it kinda funny what the children say,

Skip a rope.

Daddy hates mommy, mommy hates dad,

Last night you shoulda heard the fight they had,

Gave little sister another bad dream,

She woke us all up with a terrible scream.

(CHORUS)

Cheat on your taxes, don’t be a fool,

Now what was that they said about a Golden Rule?

Never mind the rules, just play to win,

And hate your neighbour for the shade of his skin.

(CHORUS)

Stab ’em in the back, that’s the name of the game,

And mommy and daddy are who’s to blame.

Skip a rope, skip a rope,

Just listen to your children while they play,

It’s really not very funny, what the children say,

Skip a rope, skip a rope.

Is the Antique Business, Dying, Dead, Wounded Or Just Hybernating?

If you are a small business owner of a antique business, you have probably heard the “death knoll claims”, been deluged with discouragement from the “gloom and doom”crowd and look frequently out your window to see if “the funeral procession” is passing by…I am here to tell you that while antiques as well as all discretionary retail businesses are challenged…they are not dead and won’t be any time soon!

Almost every day I hear the constant comment from some customers and a lot of discouraged dealers saying that the antique is industry is dead, dying or disappearing. There rationale is:

1. The existing customer isn’t buying.

2. The existing customer has bought all they intend to.

3. The younger customer isn’t interested.

4. Everyone that might be buying is buying online.

I would like to give you “tough and committed” antique dealers who have store fronts some counter intuitive insight and contrarian opinion about the “state of things in the antique industry”.

For years the antique industry (like many other industries in America) became over populated with part time, marginally committed participants who saw there opportunity to turn a “passion for garage sales” into “off or on the books” profits with little day to day efforts through the proliferation of antique malls everywhere! These dealers would “plop down” a security deposit, load up the SUV, get a few tables and cloths together and open up a Antique Mall Space. The large size of this group proliferated a huge amount of antique malls popping up on many main streets and malls throughout the United States.

The fallacy of this concept was the space was expensive, add on percentages pretty high, and marginally committed staff not having the same “vested interest” as a owner of a mall space would have. The dealers in the malls were not “retailing veterans” and in many cases found out at the end of the month that instead of the “slush funds” that they thought they had created, a bill for the short fall between space rent and sales was waiting for them on the first of the month instead of the hoped for check. A new “harsh reality” sunk in to the mall space tenants and they soon said this is not a good idea and “bailed” in record numbers. The “bailing process” of mall space tenants created huge empty gaps in antique malls and led to a new reality for the antique mall owner “they are upside down on their rent due to the vacancies”. This has led to record Antique Malls closing their doors and hanging the “for rent” signs on the front of the buildings.

What is the post mortem of this process? “Bigger opportunities” for the surviving retail outlets for the sale of antiques by getting a bigger slice of a (economically caused) smaller pie. This is a moment to not lament the advent of online antique sales but take advantage of it. The internet gives a dealer a chance to reach millions of new customers and “start slicing up” their share of the smaller pie. The reduction in shopping malls makes your “brick and mortar” shop more appealing to the customer who enjoys a new adventure in a antique store (as long as he or she is welcomed with enthusiasm) and well priced and unique items to be tempted by.

Willl the antique industry and store survive and return back to life? I think so. The antique customer is first and foremost a “collector” not unlike a museum. They collect things that interest them, have intrinsic value to them and that they think will in time appreciate in value. The number and longevity of museums throughout the world is testimony that there is still interest in viewing and owning things of historical significance on the part of many individuals. A private collection of a “item of passion” for a collector is their private museum to be enjoyed by themselves and shared with friends…and perhaps ultimately sold for profit!

The traits that will determine the”winners and losers” in this antique industry “shakeout” are:

1. Perserverence coupled with tight expense control.

2. Exciting and unique merchandise flowed regularly to ensure newness to your repeat customers.

3. Good value. The days of “obscene profit” are over. $10 profit to $1 investment may happen occasionally but a more modest $3 to $1 sales price to cost ratio probably will give better value and motivate the thinning “customer count” to purchase.

4. A good attitude. The last thing anyone needs (or wants to hear) when they visit a store or business for some quality shopping time is “gloom and doom”. Motivation and enthusiasm are contagious…so is wining and growsing. If you want more positive customers… be a more positive shop owner!

5. Look for new ways to reach new customers. Pack up the car or truck and hit the high, low, or medium end flea market, antique show or swap meet with a load of business cards and great merchandise. Give the people who stop by a “preview” of your taste and selection and invite them to stop by for a visit of the larger assortment in your shop. Give them a discount coupon, if you want to fuel urgency, to be used on their next visit.

6. Finally keep you store fresh. If new merchandise flow isn’t possible with current cash flow challenges… Rearrange your stocks so that the same items are presented in new locations, with new adjacencies and with new ways to visualize their use. You will find a old item becomes a new sale by simply moving it to a new location.

In summary when the going gets tough…The committed antique shop owner should look at the situation as a opportunity to grow market share…Not toss in the towel!

The world is littered with businesses that would have been successful with a little more perseverance and patience! Quitting is easy…Winning is commitment!

TOMER Orenstein – A Source Of Inspiration For Aspiring Musicians

Music is a piece of art, which is something that you have to make, play, appreciate and have fun together. Although you can play your favorite music in your car while you are driving alone, music is best enjoyed with your loved ones like friends or colleagues. And this is true even when you are a musician yourself. If you think you can become a musician from the comfort of your home, you need to think again. Let’s find out how you can become a good musician like TOMER Orenstein.

Learning to become a good musician is all about practicing your skills. You need to step out of your home and join other avid musicians. You need to learn from them and learn how creativity works.

For instance, you may get inspiration from TOMER (TOMER Orenstein). He is a young, emerging music artist, model, and songwriter. According to his philosophy, music is the symphony of life, the melody of the mind, and the rhythm of the body. Born and raised in TLV, Israel, he enjoys an inborn passion for the art of music. He was inspired to think out of the box and creative exuberating music at a young age.

Over the past four years, he wrote, composed, and produced his very first music album. His first album “Vertigo” hit more than 220k views on the video-sharing platform YouTube. This success got him selected for the “spinnup” playlist of Universal Music Group. Apart from this, he created “Superman”, which is another one of his songs that got a lot of appreciation and love from his fans. Today, TOMER has more than 13k fans on Instagram.

“If you want to become a musician, you must have both head and soul,” TOMER says. Some musicians have a lot of “head” while others have a lot of “soul”. In other words, some musicians have tons of technical knowledge of music, while others have a good knowledge of what works best when it comes to the type of groove and chord progressions. You need a balance of both the head and the soul.

To become a good musician, you may want to work on your skills, says TOMMER. For instance, if you have a lot of “soul”, you should learn the way your talent can be structured into a song. Similarly, if you have a lot of head, you should learn to think out of the box and be creative. If you are part of a group, you should learn from each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

You can also learn from TOMER. If you have not heard of him yet, you can check out this website or social media pages.

7 Tips to Help You Enjoy a Safe Online Shopping Experience

Buying online offers a great shopping experience. You can enjoy lower prices and the package is delivered to your doorstep in a couple of days if not hours. Given below are a few tips that can help you enjoy a safer online buying experience.

1. Use a Secure Connection

First of all, make sure your computer is free of any malicious software or your password may get stolen. Despite the risk, only a fraction of US residents protect their computers from viruses. So, it’s better that you use a secure connection and keep your firewall always on.

2. Buy from a Reputable Merchant

Buying from a reputable merchant is a must. After all, you don’t want to end up compromising on the safety of your credit card details. All you need to do is do your homework before buying from a new merchant. If the store you are going to buy from is not reputable, look for a different store.

3. Avoid Unreasonable Offers

If an offer seems too good to be true, leave it. The prices offered by a store should be fair. If the prices are unreasonably low, know that something is fishy. Often, disreputable online stores sell items at unreasonably low prices. You should keep away from such scammers.

4. Don’t Forget to read the Terms and Conditions

Before you buy a gift card, make sure that the store is legitimate. Also, you may not want to forget reading the terms and conditions. They will help you make the right choice. After all, you don’t want to end up paying for hidden charges.

5. Don’t Work with a Seller that asks for too much information

When buying online, you have to provide a lot of required details like your email address, mobile number, shipping address, and payment method. However, if a merchant asks for additional information, close the page and walk away.

For instance, if you are asked for your driver’s license number, social security information and bank account information, know that they are scammers.

6. Create a Unique, Strong Password

Often, you have to create an account when buying online. Typically, signing up is not mandatory. It’s better to place your order and check out without creating an account unless you are the regular buyer of the store. Even if you choose to create an account, make sure your password is unique and strong.

7. Use your Credit Card or PayPal

It’s always a great idea to use your credit card to buy online. Actually debit cards don’t come with enough security, unlike a credit card. If someone makes unauthorized transactions using your credit card information, your bank will limit your liability to $50. On the other hand, your debit card will not offer this protection. So, you can either use your credit card or PayPal for making payments.

So, make sure you follow these tips when buying online to ensure you are always on the safe side. Hopefully, these tips will help you enjoy a safe online buying experience.

Ready, Fire, Aim by Michael Masterson – Book Review

Title and Author: Ready, Fire, Aim by Michael Masterson

Synopsis of Content:

Masterson, a self made millionaire, provides somewhat of a blueprint on how to create, build and grow a small business into as large an enterprise as one could want. He divides businesses into four stages: Infancy, Childhood, Adolescence and Adulthood. He even draws some comparisons between these human development stages and the stages of growth in a company. For each stage he defines the parameters as well as the challenges and requisites for success at that stage.

Over all Masterson’s thesis is that one cannot plan and design a successful business in advance. Two likely consequences flow from such an attempt. Either the planning consumes the entrepreneur such that the execution never really happens – paralysis from analysis. Or, the plan s created and on the mistaken belief that one must then follow the plan the creator of the business fails to adjust and change as circumstances require.

Masterson insists that you must be ready to start – some form of plan and preparation are certainly essential to avoid certain failure. He then advocates action – implementing the plan before it is perfected and then refining it as you progress, thus it is Ready, Fire, and Aim rather than the traditional Ready, Aim and Fire. Rather than firing a gun, he likens starting a business to flying a plane: while you have a basic flight plan you must correct your course continually to make your designated destination.

Scattered throughout the book are additional gems of wisdom and experience from the author’s half a century building businesses. He discusses everything from career satisfaction to the value of other books and publications such as Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point (Little, Brown, 2000).

Whether you are contemplating the idea of starting a business, are in the midst of doing so or are higher up the ladder in growing an existing business there are valuable lessons and tips in this book for everyone. It is well worth the read.

Readability/Writing Quality:

Masterson writes well. He is not always as polished or as concise as one might wish but he gets his point across clearly enough. He uses lots of examples, headings and sub-headings, text boxes and other devices to organize the material and help make it more interesting and useful.

Notes on Author:

Michael Masterson is not just an author who likes to write about financial success – he has lived it. He has founded and grown several businesses including two that grew beyond $100 million in value. He has a loyal following for his Early to Rise ezine which is free and available at earlytorise.com. He has authored other books which have been on a number of best seller lists including Seven Years to Seven Figures, Automatic Wealth and Automatic Wealth for Grads.

Three Great Ideas You Can Use:

1. Developing a sales strategy is absolutely essential to any business venture. Developing an “Optimum Selling Strategy” can be the difference between success and failure.

2. Understanding the difference between marketing and sales is also critical. Learning this and putting it to work can be the difference between success and failure. Development of the Unique Selling Proposition for our business is crucial as well.

3. Every start up business needs four personality types to make it work: a seller, an improver, an organizer and a pusher. Identifying those business types in your business will make success much more likely.

Bogner Amps – The History of the World’s Finest Amplifiers

In 1989, Reinhold Bogner revolutionized the guitar amplifier after moving to the United States from Germany. It was during this time that the external multi channel pre-amp setup was being widely used and Bogner seemed to be unsatisfied with its performance, wanting to get back to the sound of real, cranked up tube amps. It may have been his meeting with guitar legend Eddie Van Halen that was the catalyst for his explosion onto the music scene, as Eddie hired him to overhaul his original Marshall Plexi.

Through the years, Bogner amps have changed considerably. You will learn in this article how Bogner guitar amplifiers have evolved over time.

Bogner Ecstasy 100

In 1992, external multi channel pre amplifiers dominated the guitar amp market. This type of setup was widely used because various sound effects could easily be achieved. And so Bogner developed the Ecstacy 100A and 100B. This is considered to be the very first production 100 watt Bogner amp. The “A” version represented the American sounding version, using 6L6 power tubes, the type of power tube traditionally used in American-made Fender amps; with the “B” version representing the British sounding version, using EL34 tubes, the type of power tube typically found in Marshall amps.

Ecstasy 101 (A.K.A the White Chassis)

Three years later, Bogner, still aiming for high quality sound coming from the amplifier, decided to come up with another version of the Ecstasy, the 101, also known as the White Chassis. This guitar amplifier is considered by many to be unmatched, even when compared to guitar amplifiers made today. This amplifier was very similar to the original 100 model, but it had more features to accommodate the demands of modern players. Over the years, the Ecstasy 101 went through a number of changes, including a stripped down version very similar to the original 100 model known as the Classic. In 1997, the Bogner 101 had a total overhaul. Instead of having just the usual white chassis (which the amp is known for), it was now covered in an elegant black.

The Caveman

This was introduced in the market in the mid-90’s but had limited availability. The prototype was said to bear the word Mojo on its back because this amp was originally a slightly different called the Mojo. This two channel amp had an interesting six position Schizo knob which greatly changed its sound.

Super Sonic

Also known as the German Uberschall, the Super Sonic is a high gain monster with two channels. A six 12ax7 power tube section yielded to a EL34 power amp to crank out 120 watts, an enormous amount of volume. Over time, the company released three versions of the amp: the original, a first revision and what was referred to as “revision blue.” The different versions related to issues such as normalizing the volume between the channels.

Shiva

The Shiva is a more subtle, well-rounded amp. It is designed to produce a shimmering, Fender-like clean tone, and a gain tone similar to a classic Marshall JCM800. This model possibly represented an attempt to expand market share by producing an amp that could be used by a wider audience and not just metal heads.

Bogner amps are played and loved by a who’s who of artists. Heavy bands such as Slipknot and Disturbed have used Bogner amps to create incredibly heavy sounds. However, world class guitar players such as Steve Vai and Joe Satriani have also played Bogners to create some of the world’s most beautiful and tonally complex music. A Bogner amplifier is a true investment, so if you can get your hands on one… do it!

Why Exports of Bangladeshi Furniture Hold a Promising Future

The Bangladeshi furniture business features an unusually great scope of inherent capacities. It is able to emerge as the nation’s 2nd largest employment rendering division, after the Bangladesh ready-made garments industry. Till now, such is being one of the vastly labor-intensive divisions, the professionals say.

Now, thanks to the well-renowned furniture manufacturers, Bangladesh is manufacturing a broad form of global criterion and excellent grade furniture. At the present moment, this has resulted in individuals of Bangladesh to pick out regional furniture rather than furniture of overseas.

The exportation of furniture and affiliated products out of Bangladesh has commenced from the year of 1995. Furniture is a labor-intensive division and Bangladesh possesses a great lowly priced workforce which is a critical element in turning competitive within the global marketplace. Hence, an effective potentiality is there with regards to exportation and manufacturing of furniture in Bangladesh are completely prepared concerning that.

It was approximated earlier that, by the year of 2015, Bangladesh will gain an inherent capacity of exportation in terms of trading furniture add-on that would unitedly have a specified value of 10 million USD while the furniture possessing a specified value of 40 million USD. By taking everything into consideration, the administration of Bangladesh has announced the furniture business as a ‘Driving force Division’.

The furniture business in Bangladesh will be up to holding a position within the international marketplace, because it possesses productive customs of wooden arts. A matter of fact is that at one time, it owned the inheritance of golden fiber. When both the expertness is capable of being merged within producing furniture products, the home goods of Bangladesh might as well vie internationally.

A larger amount of marketplaces do have an existence within the Middle East – a region that is yet to be analyzed by Bangladeshi exporters. Therefore, it is apparent that dissimilar stakeholders are reckoning the division as a likely and fruitful marketplace that is able to ease the development rate to an extraordinary extent and would result in ultimately profiting the modest manufacturers, household woodworkers, artisans and laborers.

There are many local brands in Bangladesh who have a very good reputation in the retail markets and are involved in this business for a large number of years. Various global online B2B platforms, for example, would play an important role to make these brands internationally recognized by doing their promotions and branding in various methods. This will not only make their brand renowned but will also make emerging countries such as Bangladesh proud and honored when foreigners will witness “Made in Bangladesh” on the label of the branded product.

A wide array of Bangladeshi products has found worldwide recognition and exporters in Bangladesh are looking to extend their roots deeper. Although there are resources and capabilities, but due to the lack of tools and innovations, they are unable to place themselves amongst the top ranked suppliers.

With the help of a sourcing platform, carrying out trade within the nation has turned out to become simpler. It is advantageous with regards to both, the exporter and the importer as well since everything they are looking for can be found at a single place.

Lancaster County Trembles! A New Amish Mafia "Tough Guy" Appears on the Scene!

With the departure of Jolin Zimmerman as the “enforcer” for supposed Amish Mafia kingpin, Lebanon Levi, we are introduced, in the second season’s first episode, to the newest cast member “Caleb.” Caleb is actually Caleb Isaac Meyer and, according to the show, is being tested for the “enforcer” role with a number of minor assignments.

Well, here we go again, folks! We are asked yet again by the producers of Amish Mafia to believe that some twenty-something nobody with a handful of minor infractions to his “credit” is suddenly a tough thug capable of enforcing the will of Lebanon Levi upon the folks of Lancaster County and its Amish community. What a joke! Meyer’s list of minor offenses actually paint him, at most, as having been a careless, irresponsible and fairly faint-hearted teenager, rather than a believable member of an “organized crime family.”

Consider Meyer’s most serious offense. It occurred in 2007 when he was 18 years old. He was involved in traffic accident which caused serious injury to one of the occupants of a horse and buggy while he was driving a dump truck on the Old Philadelphia Pike. The impact was serious enough to kill the horse instantly. Fortunately, the woman who received serious head injuries survived, no thanks to Caleb Meyer.

Meyer was charged with a felony. What was his crime? Why, our potential new Amish Mafia “enforcer” fled the scene of the accident and drove away. Some tough guy! Eventually the cowardly youth called his daddy. The elder Meyers came to the scene to talk to officers and eventually managed to coax his son to return to the scene and face the music. According to police investigators, “the teen was visibly distraught when he returned to the scene.” Yes, there can be no doubt that this is the man to strike terror in the hearts of the people of Lancaster County. Hide under your beds, everyone! Here comes Caleb of the “Amish Mafia”!

Quite ironically, in episode #1 of Amish Mafia’s first season, Boss Levi is depicted sending John Schmucker (another supposed “tough guy,” also notorious for fleeing the scene after causing an auto accident) and Jolin out to deal with an “Englishman” who supposedly was involved in an accident with a buggy. The show depicts Jolin administering “justice” for this heinous crime by shooting a shotgun round through the windshield of the man’s vehicle. Apparently being involved in an accident with buggy only matters if you aren’t seeking a role on the show!
