Benefits of Air Guns Over Firearms

Six benefits of an air rifle versus the traditional firearm.

Is there really a place for Air guns compared to powerful Firearms?

Are Air Guns only suitable for shooting tin cans or putting holes in paper targets?

We believe that there is a place for modern air rifles. Air gun pellets are less expensive to purchase compared to firearm bullets.

A good air rifle is more accurate than a comparable firearm. Many modern are powerful and accurate, very suitable for the hunting of small game such as squirrels rabbits and birds.

Here are a few benefits of air rifles versus firearms.

1. The ammunition will not deteriorate over time, as air rifle ammunition is simply a pellet; there are no primers powders or cases to worry about.

2. It is easier to own an air gun, as most states in the USA don’t classify air guns as firearms.

3. A good quality air gun is actually more accurate than a firearm up to the distance of around 50 yards.

4. Can be purchased at a very affordable price and even more importantly the pellets are exceptionally cheap. The more you practice the better aim you will be with an air rifle. You do not have to hold back just keep practising.

5. Most pellets lose velocity after about 50 yards which makes for safer for shooting.

6. Air rifles are comparatively quiet. Making them less likely to annoy the neighbours and when you’re hunting it is less likely to scare off other game.

Air gun designs and systems

1. Air pump system: Some rifles require over five pumps to achieve sufficient pressure in the reservoir.

2. Air tank system: a high-pressure prefilled air cartridge pushes the pallet out of the barrel. The benefit of this system is that it allows semiautomatic firing.

3. Spring & piston: the barrel is broken or cocked compressing a spring when the trigger is activated the release spring forces a piston for which compresses air that forces the pallet out of the barrel.

Differing caliber.

.177 caliber – is a very fast caliber with maximum velocity of over 1250 Feet Per Second (FPS) This caliber would easily be the most popular and is suitable for hunting small game competition shooting, plinking and target practice.

.20 calibers – This medium weight caliber has a lower velocity than the .177 caliber. It may be seen as a compromise between the 2 other calibers but the reality is that it is not very popular in the USA. The range of guns and pellets is limited in this bore and can more expensive.

22 caliber The largest commonly used caliber. These heavy pellets have a lower velocity than the smaller .177 caliber. Their velocity is between 650 FPS to 1250 FPS they do have a harder impact due to the mass of the pellet.

What is the right air rifle for hunting?

The answer of course is it depends on the game that you will be hunting.

The .177 caliber is fine for birds, squirrels and rabbits. For hunting larger animals, the heavier pellets provided by the 22 caliber bore is recommended. Ensure that the velocity is above 650 FPS.

The Differences Between a Conductor’s Sheet Music Stand and a Regular Musician’s Stand

While there is no lone characteristic that distinguishes a conductor’s stand from a musician’s stand, the one commonality that conductors’ stands seem to share is that they are much stronger (and very often larger) than regular music stands. Extra strength and size can be built into a stand in several different ways.

A Larger and Stronger Tray

Because conductors typically have to manage many more pages of music at once than performing musicians, it makes sense that conductors’ music stands usually have larger trays (the part of the stand that holds the music). Since musical scores come in all sizes, these larger trays can be either wider, or taller, or both. One typical size is a double-wide tray to allow for the easy folding out of score books.

These trays can also be made larger by the addition of a double shelf (the shelf is the part of the tray that keeps the sheet music from falling down to the floor). A stand with a double shelf, one being a couple of inches below the other, creates a kind of mini-compartment that is especially useful to a conductor because he can use it to store such things as batons, pencils, and other accessories without interfering with the sheet music sitting on the top shelf.

In addition, it is also common for conductors’ trays to be made from stronger or thicker materials because they will need to support more weight. A good example of this is the opera conductor’s sheet music stand. With this design, the tray is three-dimensional all the way around with raised edges. Consequently, music scores cannot slide off any edge and are much more secure. The tray of an opera stand also typically has lighting built in to the tray itself so there are no worries of an attached light accessory falling off.

Stronger and Multiple Shafts

The main support mechanism of a music stand is the shaft, which connects the tray with the base (the part touching the floor). In order to bear the greater weight of music needed by a conductor, the shaft is usually also stronger. For example, this can be accomplished by making the shaft thicker and/or made of stronger materials. Other conductor’s music stand designs include stands with double shafts, sometimes including a connecting crossbar for extra strength, and stands that don’t use the standard pole-shaped shaft, but rather have rectangular-shaped shafts offering four corners of support all the way up and down.

A separate feature of the shafts on these stands is that they have much greater height adjustment, since a conductor will often be standing on a raised platform while directing. This benefit does not come with all conductors’ stands, however, and a potential buyer should be sure to check.

Bases with Greater Stability

In keeping with the same theme, the base of a conductor’s music stand is very often much stronger and more stable than that of a regular stand. One style involves the combination of a double shaft together with a connecting bar between the two bases. Another style abandons the typical three-legged base in favor of a platform design. This makes tipping the stand over almost impossible. Still other styles include using a four-legged base, or a modified three-legged base with a much lower and wider leg span. These also make tipping much less likely.

Conductor’s sheet music stand cost

Finally, as you might imagine, along with all of the extra strength and stability two consequences should be noted.

One is that a conductor’s music stand will typically weigh more than a standard musician’s stand and be potentially less easy to transport. The other consideration is that, naturally, things that are bigger and stronger are also more expensive. Without getting into the use of special materials, a general ballpark cost of a conductor’s music stand will be anywhere from about fifty percent more to double the cost of a counter-part regular sheet music stand made by the same manufacturer. (Some models do cost even more.) That might sound like quite a premium, but most conductors find the added quality and benefits well worth the cost. In fact, many performance musicians use smaller conductors’ music stands because of the greater strength and stability, as well as the added convenient features, such as a double shelf or extra wide tray.

What Is a Plus Size and Why Can’t the Fashion Industry Deal With It Properly?

This is an area under debate at the moment and some people are clearly struggling with it. They know that plus size is popular and is a hot topic for discussion and they wish to participate and comment on the plus size market. But what is “Plus Size”, what does it mean and how do we view it?

The words “Plus Size” are used to refer to clothing for larger people, there is a wide area of debate around what is considered to be large, where does it start? Size, 10, 12, 14 or 16?. The debate then also becomes associated with health issues as many people consider that larger people are automatically unhealthy (this is untrue). The Fashion Industry is totally focused on how people look and larger people do not figure on mainstream fashion’s radar. This is regrettable as a lot of people are larger than the models generally used by the fashion industry (they are then expected to buy clothes modeled on thinner women). It is interesting that the fashion industry is associated with thinness which itself can also give rise to health issues. It seems that people (both large and thin) slightly outside the “norm” are viewed and treated differently though interestingly in certain circumstances both are perceived as being “unhealthy”

However these perceptions are being challenged somewhat because people are getting larger and what used to be considered “plus size” is now much more common than previously. Dress sizes have become larger over the years but have remained labeled as previously known as “Vanity Sizing” to make customers feel good about themselves. Typically the fashion markets are driven by designers setting trends. Their work is an art form and is displayed in an artistic manner. Ready to wear on the high street takes it’s cues from these trends although you also get designers who set their own trends for their market.

Ready to Wear is worn by much wider age and size groupings than shown on the Couture Catwalks, and a lot of the trends seen on the catwalk do not necessarily transfer well to the normal market. So while the “Plus Size” market may not be “media” popular they represent a good portion of people who shop for clothes.

The term “Plus Size” is commonly used in the USA but is less common here in the UK, it is a commonly used search term on Google but it’s not really that well used here in the UK. Media doesn’t really know how to handle it and this was never more clear when we saw the Vogue Italia cover for June 2011. It features 3 beautiful women photographed in lingerie. These women are plus size models and while it is wonderful that Vogue featured them on their cover is a shame that they felt it necessary to photograph the women semi naked and with one of them posed somewhat inappropriately.

Editor in chief Franca Sozzani launched Vogue Curvy in February and the June 2011 Cover of Vogue Italia was aimed at helping promote Vogue’s new affinity with plus size women. It is excellent that Sozzani has a launched Vogue Curvy, is this mainstream fashion recognising that there are lots of women out there who are curvy or plus size and who demand that their fashion needs and desires be catered for? On an equally positive note Sozzani is also campaigning against web sites that actively promote anorexia which the fashion industry has been blamed for encouraging in the past. So well done to her for taking an active stance on this issue. In time perhaps the fashion media will focus on fashion as opposed to the size of the individual wearing it. After all everyone has the potential to be elegant and beautiful regardless of their size.

“The Cut” blog also posted an article “No One Seems To Know What A Plus Size Model Really Is” and they featured some quotes from Madeline Figueroa-Jones editor-in-chief of Plus Model magazine. Interestingly “The Cut” featured a photograph of one of the covers from Plus Model Magazine and of all the covers they could have chosen they chose a cover with models wearing lingerie and posing provocatively. Plus Model Magazine has plenty of covers showing larger women wearing beautiful clothes. So it was a shame that both of these well travelled web sites chose to somewhat cheapen plus size women by showing them in skimpy lingerie (however well photographed).

Both Vogue and The Cut could have chosen photographs showing plus size women wearing beautiful clothes and illustrating the fact that larger women can look just as fabulous as other women and that fashion should be about fashion and not body size. Designers could also look at the world slightly differently and if they were brave they could view curvy women as presenting them with an opportunity to design clothes that flatter curves and to allow them to make a different and new fashion statement. At Vida Moda we argue that curves are required to wear clothes really well! It is part of our mission to find beautiful clothes for larger women that will flatter and make them feel and look wonderful.

How to Market on Facebook – Understanding the Audience Structure

Are you looking for an effective Facebook marketing strategy that will have you seeing more conversions? There are several ways to capitalize on this social media platform without breaking the bank. You can easily become a trusted authority by following these three strategies. Whether you are a new business or a seasoned professional, these methods are guaranteed to work for you!

Free Facebook marketing is a great way to convert your existing subscribers into active customers with Facebook content. You do this by maximizing your Facebook commercial account’s fan capacity, attracting more followers to appreciate your brand, and pinning a free or sale-focused deal or offer right to the top of your commercial page. The more fans you have, the higher the visibility of your promotions and offers on your actual page and in your news feed, and the more people who see your promotions, the higher the chances of conversions. With a large number of users and the potential for promotion and branding, this traffic source has an immediate ROI and is highly recommended as a Facebook marketing campaign strategy. In addition to providing an initial boost in audience engagement, this traffic source has the potential to help you gain a steadily larger fan base over time.

In the marketing strategy portion of this strategy, you need to identify your competition. Find out what your competitors are doing to get attention on this platform and try to do something unique to set yourself apart from your competitors. It is also important to note that some strategies are less successful than others. For example, if you run a physical store, try to create an interaction with your customers by giving away freebies, running contests, or even giving away promotional products to increase brand awareness. A strategy that receives minimal response may not be the best strategy for your brand.

Once you have identified your competition, it is time to start planning out a Facebook marketing campaign. There are several tools available to help you plan your Facebook promotions. These include a fan page, a business section, and a business blog that give information about your products and services. Planning out your Facebook campaign will help you determine the best way for you to promote your products or services so that they will reach the maximum number of potential customers.

Once you have determined your marketing strategy, you need to determine how to launch it. The most popular method of launching a Facebook campaign is by creating a fan page or a business section within the platform itself. This allows you to have more control over how the content will look and appeal to your target audience. However, the startup cost of creating these elements may be too high for some small businesses. If this is the case, there are other methods of launching your Facebook promotions that may be more successful.

If your marketing strategy focuses on a specific audience, then the best way to promote your brand is to create an interactive page within the social media platform itself. Building an interactive page within Facebook can allow you to engage users in a dialogue about your brand and what it offers. You can also reach a much larger audience than you would if you used a fan page or a business section. Social media platforms such as Facebook allow users to add their comments and generate feedback which allows businesses to learn how to market on Facebook effectively.

If your marketing strategy is to promote your products through Facebook ads, then you must understand how to target your audience. For example, different groups may be more likely to respond to your ads than another group might. Depending upon your target audience and how you plan on using Facebook ads, you can identify the groups that you want to place your ads on. Once you have determined who your target audience is and how you intend to use Facebook ads, you can begin to create content that can be used as Facebook advertisements. When creating content, it is important that you carefully select and carefully target the audience that will be most interested in your products or services.

By conducting an effective online audience analysis, one is better able to formulate a marketing strategy that will prove to be effective. One of the advantages of conducting this analysis is that it gives one a chance to see how other companies are marketing on Facebook. It can also help to determine how to market on Facebook efficiently, allowing you to get the most for your money. By performing effective online audience analysis, you will be able to leverage the social media platform to the benefit of your company.

A Jerky Gun – Do You Need One?

A jerky gun is a great easy to use tool that simplifies creating beef jerky. Using one of these tools can save you time and hassle. They eliminate lot of clean up because when you’re done you just simply drop the gun in the water to soak. While beef jerky can be made by hand we want to show you why it will save time. I mean it’s simple enough to roll out your own meat dehydrate it on trays and serve right? This begs the question, do you need a beef jerky gun?

Most people are scared of using tools like this. However, keep in mind how simple using something like this really is. First, you mix up your meat mixture into a large bowl and add herbs, spices and anything else. Most jerky kits come with a ready to use mixture so it makes making the actual jerky much easier. Then you load the mixture into the jerky gun and then pull the trigger and it instantly pumps out the jerky into the desired strip length.

After you’ve made the jerky then you just put it into the food dehydrator to be dehydrated. After the jerky becomes tender and dehydrated you can then pull it from the dehydrator and lay it on a cooling tray, wax paper or baking sheet. Clean up the jerky gun and store away. Now you have fresh home made jerky that you can snack on. At this point you can add pepper or any other type of additional spice to it and go from there. The nice neat strips the jerky will come out in make it easy to serve to guests, family or friends.

In closing I don’t think a jerky gun is a priority but it can be a good addition to your kitchen. Since they are so easy to use my question for you is “why not own one?” You are not just limited to beef either you can make lamb, turkey, pork and any other type of jerky meat you can think of. So, this may be the one thing your kitchen has been missing.

History of Percussion Instruments

Anthropologists and historians repeatedly speculate that percussion instruments were the first musical apparatus ever came into being. But with the utmost certainty, the human voice was the first musical instrument, and surely, percussion tools such as feet, hands, rocks, sticks and logs came in second to the on-going evolution of music. When humans developed tools for hunting and agriculture, their knowledge along side with skill, enabled them to produce more complex tools. They use slit drum, made from a hollowed-out tree trunk. For instance, a simple log may have been shaped to generate louder tones (log drum) and may have been pooled to create numerous tones (set of log drums).

As time moved on, so is the evolution of percussion instruments. In the early 10th century, it was known that most tribes in Africa use sorts of percussions such as djembe, macaras used in Latin America, karimbas in Asia and seed rattles in Australia for their recreational and worship rituals and sometimes used in sending signals.

Percussion instruments that are displayed in orchestra first came from Asia Minor. In the 15th century, people began migrating east and brought with them numerous instruments. Our percussion instruments got their initial stages there, when the Crusades took back the drums that they found in the Middle East. From then on, evolution of percussion and drums kicked up a notch and assortments of percussion instruments came into being.

Percussion is categorized by a variety of criteria at times depending on their cultural origin, construction and function within musical orchestration. It is generally referred as ?the hearbeat? of a musical ensemble, often functioning close collaboration with bass instruments if present.

Drums and percussions as well as bass are known as the rhythm section of the most popular music genres. Most classical pieces written for an orchestra since the time of Mozart and Haydn are schemed to put emphasis on strings, brass and woodwinds. However, time and again they include a pair of timpani (kettle drums) although not played continuously. But moderately, they serve to offer additional accents when needed.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, more percussion instruments (like the cymbals or triangles) came to being and frequently, again moderately and cautiously played in general. The massive uses of percussion instruments become more recurrent in the 20th century, on classical music.

In almost all types of music, percussion plays a fundamental role. In a military parade, it is the strike of the bass drum that holds the soldiers in step and at a normal speed, and it is the snare that endows that crisp, vital air to the tune of a troop. In traditional jazz, one almost instantly thinks of the distinguishing rhythm of the hi-hats or the ride cymbal when the word “swing” is uttered. In more current popular music genres, it is almost impossible to name at least three or four rock, hip-hop, rap, funk, punk, techno, grunge, alternative and blues songs that don?t have some kind of percussive beat maintaining the tune in time.

Because of the mixture and wide assortments of percussive instruments, it is not unusual to find large musical gathering composed wholly of percussion. Rhythm, harmony and melody are all evident and alive in these musical factions, and in live performances they are quite a spectacle to see.

John Styers

Most people have only been exposed to John Styers work through the book “Cold Steel”.

It is important to remember that first and foremost this book outlines a BASIC course of close-combat instruction. The elements covered in this system include bayonet, knife, stick and unarmed combat. Styers developed this “system” for BASIC training.

The framework of all of these methods remains CONSISTENT through out. The fundamentals for employing the bayonet, knife, unarmed combat and even the stick work are ALL the same.

Note in particular the “stance” used for the bayonet, the knife, and for unarmed engagement. SAME stance. The “body” mechanics involved in all the methods presented are at their core foundation ALL similar. This in itself shows “genius”.

What we see in “Cold Steel” is NOT the STYERS method! It is a “system” that STYERS developed for use in BASIC training. John Styers was a man of both great knowledge and SKILL in a number of man to man combatives.

Those who knew Styers personally have told us about his vast interest, knowledge and proven skill in a number of close-combat methods. From the “French” style of bayonet fighting, to “Russian” knife fighting, to boxing, wrestling, jiujitsu, and of course “dirty” fighting.

As concerns the STYERS knife work as shown in “Cold Steel” it must also be considered that this was but a SMALL part of Styers overall skill and ability in KNIFE FIGHTING. Again this was a system of BASIC TRAINING!

Other sources show this quite demonstrably. The man was a MASTER of bladework.

Now the knife system taught in “Cold Steel” is excellent. The “problems” that are often cited by others has FAR MORE to do with a lack of understanding in the tactics and techniques as “they” present them, than it does any practical faults in STYERS method.

ON TO THE METHOD……………………………….

First, Styers was training men for battlefield COMBAT! NOT for a “duel”. He assumed(rightly so) that in the so-called “fog” of war men will revert to pure “animal” instinct and move right in for the “kill”. Think about this! During the frenzy of real combat you and your enemy are REDUCED to fighting with knives. Men are killing and being killed ALL AROUND YOU. YOUR natural instinct for SURVIVAL will seize you by the throat. You will grip that knife as strongly(your LIFE NOW depends on THIS ONE WEAPON) as possible and MOVE RIGHT IN FOR THE KILL!(WASTE ANY TIME and someone else is going to KILL YOU) You are NOT going to “spar” or “duel”, you ARE going to KILL, survive and move on to your next threat or objective. Styers KNEW what real “kill or be killed” combat was like. He realized that MOST men in this dire situation will instinctively SEIZE their knife either in an “overhand” or “ice-pick” grip or an “underhanded” type “hammergrip”. They will ATTACK with a determined KILLING intent. THAT IS THE BASIS for the Styers method!

Now the “elements” of Styers method rest on BODY position, ARM position, and KNIFE position.

Here is where so many “experts” go right OFF TRACK. Forget any “technique”, thrust, slash or “whatever”. WITHOUT the FOUNDATION of proper BODY, ARM, and KNIFE position all the “technique” in the world is MEANINGLESS!

Without a REAL understanding of Styers FUNDAMENTAL tactic and what MUST be done to make it EFFECTIVE, all THIS becomes NO MORE than two guys trying to cut and stab each other. THIS IS NOT what Styers envisioned.

On to the “meat & potatoes”:

1. Stance-

Whether you assume the “Styers” position from a “classic” fencer’s pose, as Styers demonstrates(for continuity) or simply advance(lead leg) retreat(real leg) one pace, as long as your UPPER torso remains square and you body rests “springlike” on your legs you’re doing OK. BALANCE must be rested on your center point and the rear heel RAISED. Toes and KNEES pointed FORWARD!

KEY POINT: Body SQUARED. Torso ERECT. Chin PULLED IN. BALANCE centered. Rear HEEL RAISED.

2. Arm Position-

Gripping the KNIFE: Blade vertical to ground. Thumb EXTENDED down backstrap. Slight upward CANT or “cocking” of blade.

Weapon bearing hand and arm: Pulled IN. Upper arm slightly BACK from vertical. Elbow tucked into, not away from side. LOWER ARM raised on a plane EVEN with opponents THROAT/EYES. Weapon hand SHOULD NOT break the latreral plane of the upper torso! THIS IS KEY!

Offhand hand: Pulled in just like weapon bearing hand.

COMMON ERRORS:

Wrong foot placement.

Leanining over or into the opponent.

Chin/Head THRUST out.

WEAPON HAND EXTENDED and/or SPLAYED OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Read THAT AGAIN!

Knife LEVEL with ground and NOT POINTED at opponents EYES/THROAT!

Offhand SPLAYED out to side.

Now the WHY’S that make this method succeed or FAIL.

First, try this experiment(THIS IS SOMETHING YOU MUST DO). Don’t even talk about this “method” if you HAVE NOT honestly followed this example:

Grab a REAL SHARP FIGHTING KNIFE.

EXTEND IT at FULL arm’s length with shoulder “twisted” in for added reach.

Tell your training partner to DISTANCE himself from the weapon to a RANGE where he feels at a combatively “SAFE” range. Have someone measure that distance.

PULL your weapon arm in to a 3/4 extension and repeat. Have someone measure that distance.

PULL in FURTHER to a half bent 90 degree position and repeat.

NOW pull the weapon back to the hip and do it all again.

COMPARE the measurements at each “distance”. MOST people will REMAIN quite consistent in the ACTUAL “measured” distance of safety from tip of weapon. THEY will ALMOST always MOVE in as YOUR arm moves back, BUT the “measured” distance remains very close between ALL the given positions.

THAT is the KEY to Styers.

Extend your arm and knife all the way OUT. Your partner maintains that critical safety zone FROM the tip of your very real and sharp blade. COULD YOU cut or thrust him EASILY from that position? Not really. A committed BODY lunge or step is about all you could do to close the “gap”. Too slow.

NOW-Pull that arm ALL the way in so that it barely breaks the lateral plane of the body. AGAIN, your training partner will have a DEFINITE tendency to MAINTAIN the measured distance of the safety zone, but HE will MOVE in. The actual measured distance between him and the tip will vary little. HIS safety zone is STILL his safety zone.

What HAS changed is your ABILITY to REACH HIM in the fastest most NON telegraphed manner.

FROM the PULLED IN arm position, SQUARED TORSO, and BALANCED stance you can execute the most rapid, cobra-like attacks or counter-attacks with a great amount of RANGE.

ANY position OTHER than this one, taken by your enemy WILL put him at a SERIOUS dis-advantage. He will almost ALWAYS be offering YOU something, whereas YOU will be offering NOTHING.

His range and speed will be effected by HIS position. Your range and speed will be ENHANCED by YOURS.

IMPORTANCE of BLADE POSITION: Keep that blade tip POINTED at the angle stated. WHY? At that angle it is MUCH more difficult for the opponent to gauge the size and length of your blade. May seem like a MINOR “point”, but in a real KNIFE fight I’ll USE anything that MAY give me an edge.

TECHNIQUE:

ALL you REALLY need is a thrust, a snap-slash(DO NOT use the back snap cut with this!), a “stop-hit”, and the “hand-cut”. The step over and stab is also useful.

If “In-Quartata and Passata-soto” are NOT comfortable for you, DON’T use them! Since BOTH of these moves are MEANT as “defensive” counter-attacks against an OVERLY committed assault they are NOT mandatory.

The FIVE moves stated above are MORE than enough. PRACTICE THEM moving forward, backward and flanking left and right. I personally DO NOT train the “back” snap cut on the “snap-slash” because I know of an incident in a real fight where the knife was dislodged from the grip on the “return” when the target reflexively pulled his shoulder up after taking the first slash across the right temple and eyes. This is the story I have heard so I won’t comment further.

TARGETS: As far as “targets” go……………well the BEST real world advice I can offer is just GO for FLESH! If you see skin, GO FOR IT!

Fingers, hands, wrists, throat/neck and face. The “step over and stab” SHOULD be saved for the coup d’ grace.

John Styer’s influence was really BROUGHT to bear AFTER WWII. His methods were developed during the Korean War era, long after his discharge from the USMC.

AND……………………His job as a FLAG salesman is what brought him into contact with military bases and servicemen ACROSS the country!

There are more anecdotes and more info but this is enough for now.

I always get a “kick” when guys dismiss different methods and/or ideas out of hand. Then when I ask them to “show me”, they get the WHOLE GODDAMN thing WRONG! Of course it looks like SHIT. BECAUSE YOU”RE DOING IT LIKE SHIT!

Ok, hope some of you got some useful insight.

The first-ever recipients of a Grammy Award in the Reggae Music category which was introduced in 1985, Black Uhuru has always been one of the most progressive reggae or “reggae-rock” bands, managing to stay true to its fierce Rastafarian politics and haunting vocal harmonies in spite of many challenges over its 35-year history. And, WOW, what a history!

Black Uhuru, whose name comes from the East African Swahili language meaning “freedom” (hence Black Freedom), was originally formed as a trio in 1974 in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, Jamaica by Derrick “Duckie” (now “Gong”) Simpson, Euvin “Don Carlos” Spencer and Rudolph “Garth” Dennis. They played clubs around Jamaica but did not attract much local attention despite their Top Cat-produced singles “Folk Songs”, “Slow Coach” and “Time is on Our Side”. In the ’70s, as today, young black men in Kingston had few opportunities to break away from the poverty of the city’s slums. Reggae was certainly one escape route, but it was packed with talented hopefuls, so the chances of succeeding were very slim.

After a few years, Don Carlos left the band to pursue a solo career, Garth Dennis left for what would be an 8-year stint with the Wailing Souls, and Simpson quickly reorganized the band with Errol “Jay” Nelson and Michael Rose. This time, the group’s singles, “Natural Mystic” and “I Love King Selassie”, attracted the attention of a London distributor named Count Shelley, and Black Uhuru’s first full-length recording, “Love Crisis”, produced by Prince Jammy, was released in England in 1977. (“Love Crisis” was later re-mixed and re-released as “Black Sounds of Freedom”).

Nelson departed soon after the release, leaving Simpson and Rose to work as a duo for a while. But it wasn’t until the hottest rhythm section in reggae, Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass (who were friends of Michael Rose), graced the stage alongside them that they created their most unique sound and became the Black Uhuru with which we are most familiar. At this time, Sly and Robbie were just putting together their Taxi label, and Black Uhuru’s “Observe Life” became Taxi’s first release.

In 1978, lightning finally struck when Nelson’s spot was taken over by African-American Columbia-graduate harmony singer Sandra “Puma” Jones. Led by the distinctive prowl-n-scowl tenor of Rose, and recording for Sly and Robbie’s Taxi label, this third lineup launched the group into its most commercially successful period with the haunting hits “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, “Abortion” (banned in Jamaica), “Leaving to Zion”, “Plastic Smile”, “Shine Eye Gal” and “General Penitentiary”. All of these singles were assembled on 1979’s “Showcase” album, later reissued on CD as “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”.

The release of “Showcase” brought an invitation from a New York City radio station, WLIB, which was holding a concert at Hunter College. It was Black Uhuru’s first performance outside of Jamaica, an opportunity most reggae bands never had. “Showcase” also captured the attention of Chris Blackwell, president of Island Records, and Black Uhuru’s first major-label contract soon followed with Island’s subsidiary, Mango.

The band made their American album debut in 1980 with “Sensimilla”, which established the group’s heavy-hitting sound blending traditional roots with modern digital effects on its sizzling tracks, all written by Michael Rose, like “Happiness”, “Push Push”, “World is Africa” and, of course, the title cut. As front man for Black Uhuru, singer-songwriter Rose was approaching the international reggae stardom of the likes of Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. His vocals and his deeply conscious Rastafarian lyrics helped to bring forth an exciting era in reggae music.

The release of “Red” launched the band into the top 30 on UK charts and many considered it the group’s masterpiece, illustrating their commitment to social change. “Youth of Eglington”, written by Rose, became Uhuru’s manifesto and a reggae classic, linking Jamaican youth with African youth worldwide from Eglington (the West Indian enclave in Toronto), to Brixton (where riots paralyzed London), to Utica Avenue and Brooklyn. The album tour encountered some violence; a show in Miami was reportedly stopped because the audience brought weapons. “Red” would end up being 24th in Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Albums of the 1980s with its rootsy classics like “Rockstone”, “Sponji Reggae” and the joyous “Utterance”. Black Uhuru now found itself among the most influential reggae groups on the planet in the aftermath of Bob Marley’s 1981 death.

With the 1982 release “Chill Out”, Sly and Robbie moved Black Uhuru from the simple sound of traditional reggae to a more electronic sound called “dub”, the new sound that was becoming so popular in reggae in the mid-1980s. Some critics felt this was Uhuru’s weakest album while others marked it as their finest album of all. Some classics from this album include the title track, “Wicked Act”, and “Mondays”, which spoke to all of us working folk who see Monday as “the day slavery begins”.

The group reached its peak in 1983 with the release of “Anthem”. Island Records tried to build on “Chill Out’s” success by remixing “Anthem” in 1984 for US and European audiences (but original versions can be found on “Liberation: The Island Anthology”, a superb two-disc anthology). And, in 1985, Black Uhuru garnered the first-ever Grammy Award for Reggae Music, beating out Bob Marley and the Wailers, Steel Pulse, and Yellowman. “What is Life” was a huge hit and the album was full of classic anthems like “Solidarity”, “Elements” (a masterpiece I say), “Botanical Roots”, “Black Uhuru Anthem” and “Bull in the Pen”. While Rose had written most of their earlier stuff, these lyrics were largely written by Duckie Simpson. With this release, Black Uhuru blended a touch of pop/R&B with reggae without sacrificing quality and was able to gain more mainstream attention.

As so often happens though, success can destroy a group. In 1985, after the band’s rise to success began to slow, Michael Rose decided to try his hand at a solo career and at establishing a coffee farm in the Jamaican hills. Delroy “Junior” Reid came in to replace him, appearing first on “Brutal” on the RAS label in 1986. Reid, a devout Bobo Shanti Rastafarian, was a talented singer as evidenced by “Let Us Pray” and “Fit You Haffe Fit”, but the U.S. government denied Reid a visa to perform on tour in America, causing him to return to his solo career and Uhuru to tour without him. And, then, Puma Jones was compelled to leave for health reasons just before completing the recording of “Positive” in 1987: the singer was battling breast cancer and would pass away in 1990 at age 36. (She was briefly replaced by Janet Reid.)

In 1987, the “Reggae Times” Awards honored Don Carlos as Best Vocalist and Black Uhuru as Best Group and arranged for Simpson, Carlos, and Dennis to play together. A European tour followed, and by 1990, the original trio was recording once again as Black Uhuru. “Now” (1990) got critical praise and rose to number two on “Billboard’s” world music chart. It also garnered another Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. From “Iron Storm’s” (1992) single, “Tip of the Iceberg”, an award-winning video was made featuring controversial rap star Ice-T and was filmed on the burned-out streets of South Central Los Angeles in the wake of the Rodney King police brutality trial verdict. “Mystical Truth” (1993) and “Strongg” (1994) continued Black Uhuru’s commitment to the eradication of oppression, offering hope in spite of injustice, and received critical acclaim.

By 1995, old animosities (mostly over money) resurfaced and Uhuru split up again. But Dennis and Carlos continued to tour using the Black Uhuru name and in 1997 were taken to court in Los Angeles by Simpson, who claimed the exclusive right to the Black Uhuru name. Simpson won; Carlos and Dennis were out and lead vocalist Andrew “Bees” Beckford and harmony vocalist Jennifer “Jenifah Nyah” Connally were in, producing “Unification” (1998). Some high points were “System”, “Real Thing”, “Hail Tafari” and “Lullaby Love”. Andrew Bees and Pam Hall, rejoined by Sly and Robbie, were featured on “Dynasty” (2001) on the RAS label and toured in support of the album. (“Bees” soon left to pursue a solo career.) The wonderful greatest hits collection “20th Century Masters–The Millennium Collection: The Best of Black Uhuru” was released in 2002.

In February 2004, Simpson and Michael Rose reunited under the name “Black Uhuru featuring Michael Rose”. Together with a female backing singer named Kay Starr, they released a single, “Dollars”, and performed at several concerts.

Over the years Black Uhuru has headlined many music festivals worldwide as well as touring with groups like the Rolling Stones, the Clash, Talking Heads, and The Police. Duckie Simpson has continued to tour, with and without Michael Rose, and there is even talk of a new album!

Black Uhuru remains one of the best reggae groups ever and is firmly rooted in the heart of reggae fans everywhere. And they were voted the #1 reggae band in the “Rolling Stone’s” critics’ poll. Listen and delight in this still-evolving legend of reggae music!
